Well, I finally got an answer from Sony regarding backward compatibility. It more or less answered my question, although I'm not real pleased with the response. Basically, I need to get my hands on anything but a 40G (which is what 90% of the units sold stateside are) in order to have anything resembling BC. Here's the e-mail Sony sent me:

Hello *******,
Thank you for writing us.
The 40GB version of the PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system is not backwards compatible with PlayStation(R)2 format software. However, the 20GB, 60GB, and 80GB versions of the PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system are designed to be backwards compatible with PlayStation(R) and PlayStation(R)2 format software. Please note that some of the PlayStation(R) or PlayStation(R)2 format software titles may perform differently on your PLAYSTATION(R)3 system. We are currently verifying the compatibility of North American PlayStation and PlayStation 2 format software titles for play on the 20GB, 60GB, and 80GB versions of the North American PLAYSTATION(R)3 system.
There is updated information available about backward compatibility on our website. Please click the link at the bottom of the page to view additional information about game compatibility. For the 20GB version compatibility, please select the 60GB version to check for compatibility. PlayStation.com
Please note when searching for titles on the compatibility list, make sure that you spell the title exactly as the original on the box or disc (i.e., "&" vs "and", "II" vs "2", etc.). Additionally, you may also search for titles using a sub-term of the game title such as "Jak" or "SOCOM" and the entire franchise will come up.
In addition, we would recommend that you have the latest version of the system update for the PLAYSTATION 3 system installed. To download the latest version of the system update please visit: PlayStation.com

Well, that's it folks. I either have to find a 60/80 Gig version, OR find a 20G and upgrade the HDD (at least Sony went with the standard mini's that go into your average laptops for a hard drive, not the proprietary and pricey route that M$ went.) So my search continues.
