| IT Help Maybe you can help me then. My computer is really really slow lately. No viruses but have a lot of stuff on the HD. But still have 10.4 gb out of 80 free so would it just be the fact that my PC is about 4-5 years old thats making it slow? |

| check what programs are running. You probally have installed some programs bt forgot about them, but they stay installed and running, using up processes that are needed eleswhere. Chances are its that

Try Defragmenting it if you don't do that regularly (built into windows). There are also a lot of files after you uninstall programs that are just lying around. These are usually in a hidden folder called application data. You can find this by going to C:\Documents and Settings\Your Login Name\Application Data Also windows caches files you have used in the past so that next time, they will load faster. However they stay there if you delete the programs and files and then it slows down windows as it is trying to find files that don't exist. These are usually the prefetch folder located at C:\Windows\Prefetch and dllcache located at C:\Windows\System32\dllcache (I think). You should keep any .ini files in these directories however. After a few reboots as windows loads its files into these caches again, performance should increase. You can find a lot more information about these things from just googling the folder names. |

| Sounds like a virus... At least in my opinion, but it could just be an old computer thats on its last legs. ![]()

| New processes sounds suspious. Do you have the names of any of them? Sounds like a virus/spyware. Do a full system scan and leave it running over night. Worth running Lavasoft Adaware on top of Spybot as it can catch some of the stuff Spybot can't. |

| I took a look around the App data folder and found files from stuff I deleted nearly a year ago as well as over 5gb of unfinished torrents. A bit of improvement so far. I ran Spyware Doctor and found 16 spywares on my PC but I have to pay SD money to delete them. My AVG anti-virus doesnt cover Spyware so it seems. What files should I get rid of in dllcache? Theres over 1000 files init. |

| You can delete everything from dllcache. The only side effect is that if Windows tries to replace a file on your OS that isn't the original, you'll get an error because that is what dllcache is. However in most cases you could get the file from the Windows CD or the Internet anyway so its not a big deal. Can you run a program called HiJack this and post the log file it creates so I can check if your computer has spyware processes running? Edit--- Don't fix anything using Hi Jack This until you post here as it has the potential to destroy your windows installation because it just finds all programs with a certain behaviour be they windows or spyware. Its up to the user to work out which is which. |
