The Hobbit movie is greenlit. I saw this reported over on Empire: Film Reviews, Movie News and Interviews. It appears that Peter Jackson has sorted out his legal troubles with New Line Cinema and is going to be involved in the production of the Hobbit movie. They are reporting that the book is to be split into two movies which sounds like a smart move to me. The only downside to this report is that Peter Jackson is not directing, he is to be an executive producer. Let's hope that they find a suitable director. Due to the quality and phenomenal success of the LOTR triology the look and feel of that world has been cemented in my opinion. I can't see the director of the Hobbit being allowed to stray too far from the LOTR movies. The suggestion over on Empire is to try to hire Guillermo Del Toro. I can't think of anyone better suited to tackle this movie. Films like Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth show that he could handle the action and magical elements.

I cant wait to see this film. Although Im not happy about Peter Jacksons lack of involvement in the directing side of it I think it would be brilliant if Guillermo del Toro did it. Given his work with Pan's Labyrinth and the Devil's Backbone it should be good.

I heard that Peter Jackson was on board yesterday as well. Its a bit dissapointing that e is not directing but at least he has some input as too what goes on. They need to keep it in the same style as the LOTR otherwise it just wouldnt work right

| Hobbit update So the next two Lord of the Rings movies are all set to go, with Guillermo Del Toro in the directors chair. If we can't have Peter Jackson he is definitely the best choice as successor. Anyway here are some facts from a recent webchat with Del Toro. Quote:

I can see that casting working if it's true. Let's hope this is all lies. Jack Black? No way. He just seems out of place in a non-comedy. Just look at King Kong.

In an article today on Empireonline.com they say that Christopher Lee is interested in appearing in the two new LOTRs prequels. I've never read the Hobbit so I don't know if he would appear in the Hobbit or in the second movie that they are developing. I'd like to see him back in the role and at the age of 86 they would want to hurry up and film his scenes. Read the interview here.
