| Promotion - Seniority or ability? Do you agree with promotions based on seniority or should it be based purely on ability? Or perhaps a bit of both? At the moment I'm trying to get a semi-promotion. It is the exact same position except on a higher salary scale. It is the third time that I've been eligible for it, it seems to come around each year. Anyway, I keep being told to apply but not to be disappointed if (when) I don't get it due to other people here longer. I don't think that it is fair a very fair process. |

| Man that sucks. I believe that Promotion should be based on ability. Where im working its mostly done on ability and the ammount of ass you kiss( (ask fuzzy ). Seniority only comes into play if they are letting people go or moving people around the factory. Where the least senior gets moved or sent packing. |

| It should be on ability. Seniority means more experience but it doesn't necessarily mean they are fit for the job.

| I think it should be both. Someone there longer who is almost as skilled at you could be better at dealing with the processes in the company given the length of time they've worked there. This could make them more efficient than someone who just has skill but isn't a people person or wants to do things there way becuase they did it that way in a previous company or believe they are always right. Not saying any of the above applies, just saying it isn't as easy as being able to do the job, there are all the things that go with it that aren't in the job description too. |

| Well I submitted my form a few days ago. I got a glowing recommendation from my supervisor but I don't think they take those into consideration too much. It will probably take about a month to find out either way. |

| No harm chancing your arm. At least they know you took the initiative which seems to mean something to HR people and managers with nothing better to do with their time than keeping track of whose taking the inititative. |

| Pure ability to be honest, just because someone has been there for donkey years doesn't mean anything apart from they are to be there and most likely not push as they have it handy. You may argue that seniority brings experience etc but if you don't have the ability you won't be able to preform as well. I have seen loads of companies where you have to be there X number of years before they consider you for a promotion its not based on any merit of current job. |

| That's very motivational if you can't get a job by effort. Where I am, anyone willing to take the job on can do it For mangement positions it becomes who you know and IT people never get promoted out of the IT department even though its a website. Or should I say because its a website and they don't know anything about it, they don't IT people around at board meetings because they will show up the others ignorance. Anyway that's why everyone should have DK - Take this job and shove it and a set of speakers on their desk for when it all becomes too much. Just throw it on and walk out the door.
