Well since nobody is solely backing HD-DVD anymore, it looks like the technology will not become mainstream. Bluray switching to VC-1 codec is the nail in the coffin it seems. That's why I just bought a laptop with a bluray drive in it. I preferred HD-DVD initially because it was good enough for HD movies and it was cheaper to produce but since it has no real backing anymore I must conceed that it is probably going to die. I hate the word Bluray too ![]() I still have doubts over either format actually taking over from DVD. I think they'll be rejected by the average consumer and remain an early adopter product for years (if they ever attract the mainstream consumer) as I think most people feel DVD is "good enough" for them. Only people with 40-50" HDTV's will actually need to upgrade. For everyone else, DVD is acceptable until these players are dirt cheap and even then people might not want to bother replacing their DVD players. There is really little reason to upgrade unless you love movies an awful lot. I say after watching Bluray movies and doing a comparison with DVD just last night. I think there is a reasonable to big difference but that the average consumer just won't care because of the cost and hassle involved in upgrading.

It cost €162 including shipping I bought it . I have the Toshiba HA-A3 already its more or less the same dvd player bar the Ep10 outputs at 1080p guess I need a new TV.I don't see the point of people saying "Bluray won" if anything I won with my 2 HD DVD players as i got them cheap and I'll get the movies cheap as people try to get rid of em ![]() Wont buy a Bluray standalone till the dual formats hit the shelves at a reasonable price. already got 20+ HD DVD's and think there the biz!

One area that HD DVD is better than Blu-Ray is in the selection of older movies. That is perhaps another reason why HD DVD is failing. The Blu-Ray camp seemed to concentrate on getting the latest movies released on the format while HD DVD concentrated more on classics. I think that may have been a bit of a mistake.
